THE ROSE BOWL (CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP)
The Rose Bowl Trophy
Inscribed on the trophy:
PRESENTED TO THE LEEDS CHESS CLUB BY CECIL W. JEFFERY AS A TROPHY FOR THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT 16th SEPT. 1909. |
The Rose Bowl (or LCC Club Championship) Trophy was keenly contested throughout the 20th century. Fewer and fewer members entered the tournament in the 1990s until the tournament kind of faded away. The busy modern schedule with leagues matches on Wednesday and Saturday, country matches, congresses, online play, etc, leaves little room for it in the calendar. Efforts are underway to revive the competition, possibly involving an element of online play.
Most Wins (1902-95)
9 - F Schofield 8+ - MJ Haygarth, JE Povey 4 - CW Jeffery 3 - A Schofield, S Spink 2 - HA Burton, MJ Spencer, J Silverman 1 - sixteen others We don't know for sure which player has won the club championship the most times, as we have missing records when Haygarth and Povey were fighting it out.
NB 6-times British Champ FD Yates never entered the tourny. Our other British Champ (1964) MJ Haygarth on the other hand entered every year without fail. We're not sure if CG Addingley ever entered. Despite winning the Silver Knight six times in the 30s, 40s, & 50s, there is no record of him ever winning the club championship. |
