CLUB HISTORIES
"Histories" rather than "History" because there are many ways of looking at things from many different perspectives. What makes a chess club? Surely, its members are its heart and soul. Perhaps ten generations have come and gone in nearly two hundred years of Leeds Chess Club history.
We have been graced with remarkable organisers and officers, players (including two British champions), visitors (including Capablanca and Alekhine), and benefactors (the club's trophies are valued at over fifty thousand pounds). Famous visitors include: Naturally enough, the club has had its ups and downs in that time too, from record-breaking triumphs to absolute disasters which have almost ended its existence. 1820 - 1834
The club's origins are shrouded in the mists of time. Before 1834, little is known, but it is evident that a proto-Leeds Chess Club was in operation as early as 1820 and maybe before. Find out more here. 1919 - 1982
